  • Tigers' Joey Wentz: Looking better lately

    Rotowire

Wentz tossed a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts in Wednesday's loss to Atlanta, extending his streak of scoreless outings to four.

Wentz has had an up-and-down season, though he's trending upward recently. The lefty had a 1.08 ERA across his first 11 appearances, then posted a 16.00 ERA over his next six games before his current scoreless streak started. Overall, Wentz has a 5.34 ERA, and he's mostly off the fantasy radar as a low-leverage reliever despite his better results lately.

  • Tigers' Izaac Pacheco: Gets hand surgery

    Rotowire

High-A West Michigan transferred Pacheco from its 7-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday after he underwent surgery June 11 to address a hamate excision in his right hand, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Pacheco suffered the injury while batting in West Michigan's June 6 game against South Bend and was placed on the 7-day IL a day later. The No. 39 overall pick in the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, Pacheco had gotten off to a poor start to the 2024 season before suffering the injury, slashing just .198/.263/.316 with four home runs in 194 plate appearances. After getting moved to the 60-day IL, Pacheco won't be eligible to return to the West Michigan lineup until early August.

  • Sean Murphy has pair of 2-run homers and Braves earn 3-game sweep of Tigers with 7-0 victory

    Stats

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Takes second straight loss

    Rotowire

Skubal (8-3) took the loss Wednesday against Atlanta, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out seven.

Most of the damage against Skubal came via the long ball Wednesday -- he gave up a two-run homer to Sean Murphy in the third inning before Ramon Laureano tacked on a solo shot in the fourth. The 27-year-old Skubal has now lost back-to-back starts for the first time this season -- he's given up eight earned runs over 10.1 innings in that span. The left-hander still sports a solid 2.50 ERA on the year with a 0.97 WHIP and 105:18 K:BB across 90 innings. Skubal is lined up for another tough matchup next week at home versus the Phillies.

  • Tigers' Beau Brieske: Looks sharp Tuesday

    Rotowire

Brieske tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Atlanta. He struck out two.

Brieske helped keep Detroit in the game but didn't get enough run support to possibly scoop up his second win of the season. The righty allowed two earned runs in consecutive outings earlier this month, but since then he's rattled off four straight scoreless innings. Overall, Brieske has a solid 2.95 ERA and 0.87 WHIP across 18.1 innings this year.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Resting Wednesday

    Rotowire

Kelly is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Kelly will hit the bench for Wednesday's day game after he caught eight innings of Tuesday night's 2-1 loss while going 0-for-3 with a walk. Jake Rogers will spell Kelly behind the plate for the series finale.

... See More ... See Less

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Exiting starting nine Wednesday

    Rotowire

Malloy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Malloy will take a seat for the series finale after he started the first two games in Atlanta while going 0-for-6 with a walk and four strikeouts. Mark Canha played first base in Tuesday's game but will serve as the Tigers' designated hitter Wednesday while Malloy hits the bench.

... See More ... See Less

  • Tigers' Matt Vierling: Getting day off

    Rotowire

Vierling is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Atlanta, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Vierling had made 13 consecutive starts and the Tigers are wrapping up their series with a day game after a night game, so the 27-year-old is presumably just getting some routine maintenance. With Vierling on the bench, the Tigers will open up a spot in the starting outfield for Akil Baddoo, who will man left and bat eighth.

... See More ... See Less

  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Takes another loss

    Rotowire

Mize (1-5) took the loss Tuesday against Atlanta, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks with three strikeouts across four innings.

Both of the runs charged to Mize came in the first inning, when he yielded three consecutive hits -- including a triple by Ozzie Albies -- to open up the game. While Mize hasn't found the win column since April 21, Tuesday's start added on to what's been a solid stretch for the 27-year-old. He's surrendered three or fewer earned runs in seven of his last eight appearances and owns a 4.43 ERA with a 46:19 K:BB on the year.

  • Tigers' Alex Lange: Set for surgery

    Rotowire

Lange was diagnosed Tuesday with a right lat avulsion and is scheduled to undergo surgery next week, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Lange suffered the injury in his appearance with Triple-A Toledo on Friday. The 28-year-old opened the 2024 campaign in Detroit's major-league bullpen before being sent down in late May, compiling a 4.34 ERA and 1.77 WHIP with 21 strikeouts over 18.2 innings in 21 appearances with the Tigers. An exact timetable for Lange's return will likely be provided following the surgery, but he's set to be placed on the minor-league injured list in the near future and could be at risk of missing the rest of the season.

  • Tigers' Eli Villalobos: Catches on with Detroit

    Rotowire

Villalobos signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Monday.

Villalobos made his MLB debut earlier this season with the Marlins, appearing in three games as a reliever and covering 4.1 innings before Miami optioned him back to the minors May 11. He was outrighted off the 40-man roster later that month and elected to become a free agent upon clearing waivers. Villalobos didn't take long to find a new opportunity with the Tigers, who assigned him to the rookie-level Florida Complex League after signing him. Before joining his new organization, Villalobos hadn't pitched since May 24, so he likely just needs some time to get ramped back up before eventually settling into a relief role with Detroit's Triple-A affiliate in Toledo.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Ready for rehab assignment

    Rotowire

Faedo (hip) is scheduled to join Triple-A Toledo this week to begin a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports.

Faedo has been on the injured list for just under two weeks with right hip inflammation, so he'll likely need just one or two rehab appearances before he's cleared to rejoin the Detroit bullpen. After being deployed mostly in middle relief or long relief earlier in the season, Faedo had moved his way into higher-leverage spots prior to landing on the IL. In his last 11 appearances before being deactivated, Faedo notched one win and six holds.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Will be out beyond minimum 10 days

    Rotowire

Baez (spine) is without a precise timeline to return from the injured list, but the Tigers are preparing for him to miss more than the minimum 10 days, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Baez's stint on the IL is retroactive to June 9, making him eligible for activation at any point after Tuesday. However, the Tigers don't seem eager to rush Baez back from lumbar spine inflammation, especially after the shortstop had dealt with back pain for much of last season. Baez visited a doctor in Florida this past weekend and received an injection in his back to alleviate the inflammation, and the shot appears to have taken the desired effect since he began participating in light hitting drills Tuesday, per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Zach McKinstry and Ryan Kreidler have formed a platoon at shortstop since Baez went on the shelf.

  • Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: Without timeline for return

    Rotowire

Carpenter hasn't resumed baseball activities since being diagnosed with a lumbar spine stress fracture in late May, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Carpenter was placed on the 10-day injured list May 29 with lumbar spine inflammation, only for his diagnosis to change a couple days later once he underwent further testing. Three weeks after landing on the shelf, Carpenter remains limited to doing what manager A.J. Hinch described as therapy work, so the 26-year-old still looks to be at least a couple weeks away from being ready for game action. During Carpenter's ongoing absence, Matt Vierling has taken hold of a full-time role in the outfield, and Justyn-Henry Malloy has settled in as the Tigers' primary designated hitter.

  • With power stroke returning, Braves face Tigers again

    Stats

  • Albies hits go-ahead homer in 8th as Braves overcome strong start by Olson and beat Tigers 2-1

    Stats

  • Tigers' Riley Greene: Reaches three times in loss

    Rotowire

Greene went 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI in Monday's 2-1 loss to Atlanta.

Greene didn't get much support from the rest of the lineup but it was still a good day for the young outfielder. He's been locked in this month with a .305 batting average across 15 games, and that's pushed his overall average to .254. Greene is a dynamic talent who can really take off if he keeps making consistent contact at the plate like he's done recently.
